This musical play follows two strangers, seemingly worlds apart, as they come to realize just how in tune they are with each other. With original songs penned by Ortega and scored by José Promis, as well as classics from Singaporean-Malaysian singer and icon Saloma and pop sensation Agnes Monica, PALINDROMES comes at a time of division to remind us that, maybe, we've all just got each other backwards.

This poetic play is written and performed by Zora Imani Smith from Singapore and Giovanni Ortega from the U.S.A. For tickets and more info, visit this link.

CONTOUR Marathon Reading

As we gear up for the Poetry Festival Singapore 2019 and the official launch of CONTOUR: A Lyric of Cartography of Singapore, the poets of CONTOUR - from Professor Edwin Thumboo to Cyril Wong - come together once again to make history come alive! Starting from mid-July 2019 all the way through the festival, the contributors of CONTOUR take turns to step in front of the camera and recite their own poems from the anthology. These videos will then be featured on our Instagram as stories and kept indefinitely in an Instagram highlight titled "CONTOUR MARATHON READING".

Want to own a piece of history? Click here to pre-order the anthology now! We're also selling special CONTOUR sweets in conjunction with our fundraising efforts as well, so grab those while stocks last too!

Come witness the transformative power of poetry across different linguistic traditions and cultures. In this two-in-one event, breathtaking poetry showcases in Malay and Tamil will be followed by a forum centred on the theme, “Confluence: Literature and its Meaning for Humanity.” This forum attempts to showcase how the Malay, Chinese, Tamil and English literary traditions each engage, in their own ways, with deeply human concerns - from the suffering of marginalized groups to celebrations of humanity's potential for solidarity. The role of literature in this sense is imperative for the nurturing human empathy, dignity and magnanimity.

The forum, moderated by Dr. Azhar Ibrahim, will feature four panellists - Sithuraj Ponraj, Muhammad Andi Zulkepli, Dr. Fan Jinghua and Dr. Loh Chin Ee - each representing one of Singapore's major literary traditions.

Migrant Poetry x Music Carnival of Poetry Concert
21 JULY 2019 | SUNDAY
4:15pm - 5:15pm
The Arts House, Gallery II
$5.00

This special poetry reading, singing and dancing session by the Migrant Writers of Singapore aims to celebrate the universality of literature, specifically poetry, as a medium to communicate, to unite and to celebrate humanity.
The diverse line-up of poets includes Shy Lhen Esposo (Philippines), Vijaya (Sri Lanka), Neng Jihan (Indonesia), Ohn Tint Wai (Myanmar), and Wei Hou (China). Nizamul Haque (Bangladesh) and Uchie Mudjiyati (Indonesia) will also be showcasing their dance moves, accompanied by the smooth vocals of Nil Sagar (Bangladesh).

Each monthly session of Carnival of Poetry revolves around a pre-announced theme and will showcase selected poems and critiques. The Carnival intends to provide every migrant poet with a platform to read their works and to discuss their views in front of an audience. The doors of Carnival of Poetry are equally open to non-migrant workers, because we believe that poetry has neither barrier nor border. Poetry is the language of the human soul that bridges humans coming from different shores. Carnival of Poetry is more than a ‘migrant poet’ event. It is intended to be a carnival of ideas, emotions, cultures and humanity united by poetry.

"Converse in Verse": A Tamil-Chinese Joint Poetry Reading
21 JULY 2019 | SUNDAY
5:30pm - 7:30pm
The Arts House, Gallery II

For the performers of “Converse in Verse”, there’s no such thing as a language barrier, not when it comes to poetry. 6 pairs of Tamil readers – each pair comprising a poet from Kavimaalai Singapore, and a special guest of their choice – will engage in poetic dialogue with 4 Chinese poets. Each reader will attempt to “converse in verse” through their respective Mother Tongues. The dialogues will be followed by discussions about the work featured. The session will also feature guest speaker Samraj, a notable poet, director and visiting facilitator for the NAC-Tamil Murasu creative writing workshop.
